Although the song is about a woman, it opens with the word “man”, and an assertion of her masculinity. Note the contrast between Bowie’s use of “dude”, and the quaint way he tells her to “hold her mad hands”. In this way, he blurs both gender and setting, creating an instant sense of unease.
Androgyny is a reoccurring motif in Bowie’s work, across his music videos (“The Stars (Are Out Tonight)”, “Life On Mars?”), fashion, and of course, his music. Most prominently, the deion of Ziggy (Marc Bolan) in “Lady Stardust”:
